Well I'll tell ya, There isn't too much in Wyoming or South Dakota. We saw a whole bunch of road, and endless nothingness all the way to Mount Rushmore. We made our way through small towns that had less a population of less than 50. One town actually boasted a whopping 4 people in the whole town. There were no close farms so we wondered about what a day in the life of one of these four people would be like. We also passed a Senior Rodeo that apparently had just ended. Those were basically the highlights until we got to Rushmore. Needless to say, we were not major roads, we were traveling some of America's finest back roads.
We got to Rushmore right at sunset. Driving through the park we noticed that it was extremely beautiful and nothing like the surrounding landscape. It was very lush and had a few lakes that we could see. We saw a few mountain goats I believe as we made our way to see the monument. We were surprised that we didn't have to pass through a main gate to pay to see the monument. All of a sudden the single lane road widened and we could tell we were coming up on something big. It ended up being a huge parking deck where we had to pay our $8.00.
We got a chance to tour around an look the place over. To be honest we were both expecting it to seem a bit bigger, but we were still very impressed. I was kind of sad to see that they made a spectacle of the place by building a full amphitheater, restaurant, and gift shop all within 100 yards of the monument. The four former presidents and leaders had become the backdrop to a small amphitheater.
We hung around for a while then made our way out. We decided to stop off at a campground just outside of the park that had a restaurant located right in the middle... We grabbed some dinner and headed out; Next destination Detroit.
We drove late into the night and finally called it quits in a town called Plankinton, South Dakota located about 90 miles west of Sioux Falls. We are both ready to get to Michigan and see what there is to offer there. We have enjoyed the trip immensely, now we are ready to get to our new home. We drove through the night in hopes to set ourselves up to arrive in the Detroit area by Monday. From here on out its nothing but road and gas stations...
