As you can see, we didn't get too many miles under our belt. However, we did have a great time seeing many of the San Francisco sights. We started off the morning a bit later than we had planned so we headed straight to Alcatraz to go for a tour because the tours are known for quickly selling out. We got to the ticket office and low and behold we find out that Alcatraz tours were sold out for the day. We walked around disappointed for a little while searching for other means to get on one of the tours. We finally ended up finding a small travel agency on pier 39 that still had tickets for today. So if anyone ever wants to see Alcatraz, there are always tickets available when the main ticket counter sells out.We ended up having some time to kill before the trip to Alcatraz so we walked over to part of Fisherman's Wharf to get some fresh shrimp.
"The Rock" was very interesting. A self-paced audio tour made the trip worth while. There were numerous stories told by ex inmates, but the coolest thing was walking through the cell blocks while the audio provided ambient noises of what the prison would have sounded like when it was full of prisoners.
After we got back to Fisherman's Wharf we walked around a bit and checked out the famous seals off of pier 39. Then we just decided to go drive around a bit more in the city and ended up coming across the crooked road so of course we had to drive down. Its hard to believe that people's homes are right on that road. Who would want tourists driving by and walking around your front yard?
We then decided to leave and head towards Napa. On our way out we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge. Napa was beautiful. It is basically a small town surrounded by endless hills of grape vines. We grabbed some food in Napa and ended up stopping in a town outside of Sacramento called Fairfield.
We plan to get some miles under our belts tomorrow. We're headed towards Portland and plan to just drive through and check it out. We probably wont stop in Portland for long unless we see something that really catches our eye.We are really excited to just have an all day driving to absorb the various landscapes that California, and especially Oregon, have to offer.
