Today was an adventure... and one that started very early. We were informed that this time of year Yosemite gets extremely crowded. In order to avoid all the crowds we woke up with the sun (5:45 am) in order to be on the road by 6:45. This worked out well since we were still about an hour from where we wanted to be which was Yosemite Valley.
The drive there was quiet and absolutely breathtaking. Each new bend of the road seemed to get better than the last. We wanted to see the Yosemite Fall which was detailed in our tour book as one of the largest water falls in North America... so that was our first stop. What we didn't count on was that these are seasonal waterfalls and this wasn't the season for seeing any water. They were completely dry! So we headed out to another waterfall that proved to be more successful. This was a mile hike to the base of the falls and it was well worth the climb. We sat under a tree and ate our lunch as we watched the falls above.
After the stop for lunch we decided to alter our original route to San Francisco and go the longer route which would bring us to Tanaya Lake. This was about 50 miles out of the way but well worth it. The vision of a crystal clear lake in the middle of enormous rock mountains took our breath away. After a swim and a snack we were well relaxed and ready for the long trip to San Francisco which was still about 5 hours away. The drive here was wonderful but at times caused a little anxiety. For a majority of the trip we were traveling at 9,000 feet above sea level winding around steep inclines and descents, one of the signs indicated a 29% grade. We arrived at our hotel in Dublin, CA safely and plan to make the hour trip into downtown San Fran tomorrow morning (but not quite as early as today).
